A longitudinal investigation of the effects of parental discipline strategies on social competence in early childhood

In the current study, we investigated associations between parenting discipline strategies (i.e., physical punishment and non-violent punishment) social development using n = 3265 reports from primary caregivers across three waves of data. Analyses were conducted cross-lagged structural equation modeling, where evaluated developmental effects on competence. The findings showed partial support for changes competence unfold reciprocally longitudinally; relationship appeared unrelated, as in Wave 2 only negatively predicted 3. These underscore importance understanding pathways skill among children living urban neighborhoods.
